My Journey to Ayurveda: Angelica's Mini Victories on the Path to Healing

Posted by Smita Kishore on

I am the type of person that is always looking to see what I can improve, learn and work on next. But sometimes I forget to look back at my successes and soak up my achievements. Can you guess what dosha I am? 😂 🔥

My healing journey has been for my whole life and will continue to be. But the first time I was actively trying to heal my imbalances was in 2016. It was at this time that I could not handle my Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBS) & amenorrhea symptoms. I went to a western doctor that told me to follow the fodMAP food list for my IBS and talk to my OBGYN for my amenorrhea. I did follow the fodMAP for a while, but it was unsustainable. And I did not want to go to my OBYGN because she only knew to prescribe me birth control. Deep down, I knew there had to be a root cause to both of these symptoms, but western science was not made for that. So, I did my own google research and kept coming across the name AYURVEDA.

I ignored the call to study this science for some time now. I had this fear in the back of my head that it would tell me to stop doing the things that brought me joy at the time like going out and drinking (this was just my inner critic judging the choices I was making). But I got to a point where I needed to make a change, so I started to study the science of Ayurveda at the California College of Ayurveda and let go of my objections.

Little by little, I would learn what lifestyle habits and diet choices were best for my imbalances and every time it blew my mind. If you are not familiar with IBS, it completely throws off your elimination. One week I would have multiple bowel movements per day and the next week barely any. For the first time in a long time, my elimination was getting regulated; BMs at the same time every day and healthy ones! This was huge because it immediately impacted my energy levels. In Ayurveda, the digestive system is king. Once you regulate it, it assists in healing all other systems of the body.

Also, my sleep was also becoming so sound and complete!! Before, I would wake up in the middle of the night, at the same time almost every night, usually worried about a work issue or a problem to solve. But I was soon sleeping right passed my unofficial wake-up time and actually had the energy to get out of bed for my alarm. Crazy!! This is what normal people feel like?!

Mentally, wow, this was probably my biggest achievement. Before, I would get severe anxiety on Sunday nights. There was a tightness in my chest, and I had this jarring feeling inside me. It began to trickle into my weeks. One week I was super anxious and had an unstable amount of energy. The next week I was exhausted and had no motivation to get out of the bed in the morning (seeing the parallels between my physical and mental imbalances? ;)

This teeter from one extreme to the next eventually BALANCED out and completely dissipated my anxiety! Is this even possible?! One science can solve all of these problems! I honestly forgot about my Sunday night anxiety until I reread an old journal entry. I could feel the confusion and frustration jumping out of the page as I read the passage. I felt for my unhealed self and wept for her. And soon after, I was overcome with a sense of empowerment. I was damn proud of the healer she had become.

These mini victories were the reason I continued to keep studying Ayurveda and how I eventually healed my imbalances. They were validation that I was doing the work and it was working. Ayurveda works if you trust it and meet yourself with the utmost compassion and love.

Peace, love, and healing,

Angelica
