Product Spotlight: The Ins + Outs of Your Natural Deodorant

Is your natural deodorant paste starting to look like this?

Or like this?

It's not your fault, and it's not your deodorant's fault either! Just like with food, organic products tend to separate, especially in warmer environments. This simply means that you need to stir it well before applying to help reincorporate all of those pure ingredients.

What Are These Layers?!

As the weather gets cooler and the heat turns on in your home, you might notice the deodorant paste beginning to melt. This is perfectly natural as the main ingredient in our deodorant paste is coconut oil, which happens to melt at around 76°F.

As the coconut oil melts, you'll notice it rising to the top of your jar, while the arrowroot powder and baking soda remain at the bottom. As the deodorant paste begins to cool, returning to its natural state, the coconut oil will remain solidified at the top. Simply use your mini dowel to give it a nice stir anytime this happens. And don't worry, your deodorant is perfectly safe to use and will be just as effective :)

You Gotta Keep 'Em Separated

When you put two good things together and they separate, they're meant to! The idea that our products should look flawless, never separate, harden or melt is just ensuring that there will be something not so great in them (AKA chemicals or artificial preservatives).

Before beauty products became mainstream, people used the ingredients in their environment to moisturize, soothe and heal their skin. It wasn't until large companies came along and needed longer shelf lives to increase their margins or to reach distant shores, that all of these chemicals found their way into our everyday products.

Sure, for some, skincare that lasts forever and never changes consistency may be worth it, but is it good for you? Organic products, just like organic food, may require a little extra care, but the benefits are truly life-changing. So if your deodorant separates, show it some love and stir away!

Some Quick Fix Tips

  • Stir Away! If your deo has melted or separated, use the mini dowel provided to gently stir until all of the ingredients are mixed together well, then apply as normal. Note: Some discoloration is normal when you're deodorant paste melts and rehardens. This is perfectly natural with organic ingredients and just as effective and safe to use ;)
  • Say No to Heat. Remember to keep your natural deodorant out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, to best preserve its paste-like state. Store in a cool, dry place when possible.
  • Adapt with the Seasons. Different seasons bring different temperatures, even around the house, so be sure to experiment with the best place to store your deo. While mine stores well in our bathroom in the summer when it's cooler inside, in winter this is definitely not an option as it will melt in no time! During the cooler months, I typically store my deo on my dresser, away from direct sunlight.
  • Use Within 6 Months. For best results, use your natural deodorant within 6 months of opening.
