DIY: Sustainable Christmas Tree

Posted by Smita Kishore on

With all of the trees being cut down every year for the holidays, we wanted to find a way to reduce our carbon footprint. Here’s a fun and easy way to create a truly green Christmas tree. No drill. No Glue. No building experience required! Bonus: it doubles as wall art all year long ;)

What You'll Need:

    • 9-12 pieces of birch branches, about 3-4 inches thick (we got ours from Hobby Lobby)
    • Mini hand-saw
    • Twine
    • 2 3m heavy command hooks
    • Ornaments
    • Lights
    • Scissors
    • Sharpie

How-To:

1. Cut your birch branches down to size, beginning with the bottom branch and make your way up. Cut each branch 3-4 inches smaller on each side than the one before it. Tip: Line up the branches, one above the other, to make sure you’re creating the shape you want.

2. Each branch will be held up by the one above it, using your twine. Cut your twine into even length pieces. Starting with the bottom branch, tie each side of the branch to the branch above. Make sure to tie them at even lengths otherwise your tree will come out lopsided. Use a measuring tape, rather than trying to eyeball it. It will save you much more time than you think! Tip: We laid out a long string of twine and marked our tie points with a sharpie to make this process easier ;)

3. Once you’ve tied the bottom branch to the one above it, move 3-4 inches in on the next branch and repeat step #2. Keep repeating this process until you reach the top.

    4. Hang your tree on the wall. All of your weight will be supported by the top branch, so make sure your hooks are sturdy enough to support this weight. We used two 3m heavy command hooks that worked just fine.

    5. Once hung, carefully drape your lights starting from the top, moving from side to side as you work your way down.
    6. Add your ornaments and any personal touches. BONUS: Use your leftover small pieces of wood to make a star :)

Once the season is over, we like to take our ornaments down and leave the branches and lights up, so this doubles as wall art all year long. Happy Holidays!
